Model Overview

The Versailles C5 X is a D-segment crossover sedan by Dongfeng Citroën. Making its global debut in 2021, it serves as a core strategic model for the Citroën brand in the Chinese market. Built on the EMP2 platform, the vehicle blends design cues from sedans, SUVs, and estate wagons, pioneering a distinctive "three-in-one" crossover segment. Both the 2025 and 2026 model-year variants are currently sold concurrently. The 2025 model was launched in June 2025 in two variants—Overseas Edition A and Overseas Edition C—both priced at RM137,700. The 2026 model was launched on 23 March 2026, offering three variants: Yuebufan, Yubufan, and Yaobufan, with official retail prices ranging from RM141,700 to RM186,700 alongside a promotional nett selling price ranging from RM113,700 to RM153,700 (inclusive of brand trade-in subsidies). As the best-selling French car model in China, the Versailles C5 X shoulders the critical mission of sustaining and transforming the Citroën brand in the Chinese market.
Design Language
The Versailles C5 X adopts Citroën’s signature "V"-shaped design motif. Its front fascia features split LED daytime running lights integrated with a full-width slatted grille, with the main headlamps positioned lower on either flank to create a bold, distinctive face. The front bumper sports tiered air dams flanked by chunky black body cladding, delivering both visual presence and a rugged stance. Along the sides, the silhouette combines a fastback roofline and a floating roof effect, marrying the sleek proportions of an estate with the dynamic stance of a crossover. At the rear, the liftback tailgate is fitted with twin bootlid spoilers and split smoked LED tail lamps, ensuring high road presence. The 2026 model adds an exclusive Firefly Red HYPNOS badge and a flowing lattice graphic on the rear quarter windows, while the Yaobufan variant gains aluminium roof rails to accentuate its lifestyle touring appeal. It measures 4,805 mm in length, 1,865 mm in width, and 1,505 mm in height, with a 2,785 mm wheelbase, placing it firmly in the D-segment. 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels come standard across the range.
Inside, the cabin features Citroën’s signature layered dashboard layout. Standard across the 2026 range are a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a flat-bottom three-spoke multifunction steering wheel. Infotainment duties are handled by a 10-inch touchscreen on the Yuebufan, which is upgraded to a 12-inch unit on the Yubufan and Yaobufan variants. The 2026 model offers two interior colour options: Silverstone Dark Grey and Mubai Light Grey.
Powertrain & Performance
The Versailles C5 X is powered across the range by a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine (360THP) pushing out 129 kW (175 PS) and 250 Nm of torque. The powertrain incorporates twin-scroll turbocharging, homogeneous direct injection, CVVT (Continuous Variable Valve Timing), and CVVL (Continuous Variable Valve Lift) technology. Drive is sent to the front wheels via an Aisin 8-speed automatic transmission, complemented by standard paddle shifters and a drive mode selector (Eco/Normal/Sport) across all variants. WLTC combined fuel consumption is rated between 6.38 L/100 km (2025 model) and 6.44 L/100 km (2026 model). The engine is compatible with RON 92 petrol. Top speed is rated at 221 km/h.
Chassis & Handling
The chassis is the technical cornerstone of the Versailles C5 X. Suspension setup comprises MacPherson struts up front and a high-rigidity torsion beam axle at the rear. Citroën's proprietary PHC (Progressive Hydraulic Cushions) suspension—often dubbed the "Magic Carpet Ride"—is standard across the range. The PHC dampers provide minimal damping over minor road imperfections for a supple ride, progressively firming up damping force as suspension travel increases to adapt dynamically to diverse road conditions. Developed from Citroën's WRC rally heritage, the dampers feature hydraulic rebound and compression stops at both ends. Combined with MCS master chassis tuning, the system automatically softens the damping over rough surfaces while stiffening up to reduce body roll during high-speed cornering. Paired with a Bosch ESP 9.3 stability control system, it strikes a fine balance between ride comfort, sharp handling, and road safety. Boasting a minimum ground clearance of 193 mm, an 18° approach angle, and a 23° departure angle, its rough-road capability rivals that of mainstream SUVs.
Cabin & Equipment
On the connectivity front, the 2026 Versailles C5 X features the C-Connect 3.0 infotainment system, offering online GPS navigation, intelligent voice control, streaming music/online radio, wireless Apple CarPlay/CarLife, and OTA software updates. The top-spec Yaobufan variant adds a 3D full-colour eHUD head-up display projecting onto an expansive 500×235 mm viewing area.
Convenience and comfort kit on the 2026 range includes auto LED headlights, acoustic double-glazed front glass, power-adjustable/folding heated door mirrors, keyless entry with push-start button, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather upholstery, 6-way powered front seats, heated front seats, dual-zone auto climate control, rear air vents, and an 8-speaker audio system as standard. The mid-spec Yubufan adds elegant ambient lighting and ventilated front seats. The range-topping Yaobufan further gains a panoramic glass roof, a hands-free powered tailgate, 12-way power adjustment for the driver's seat, 10-way power adjustment for the front passenger seat, front seat ventilation and massage functions, driver's seat memory with welcome entry function, a wireless smartphone charger, and an 11-speaker HiFi sound system. Citroën's Clean Cabin air quality system with PM2.5 filtration and real-time air monitoring is standard across the board. Boot capacity ranges from 545 litres to 1,640 litres with the rear seats folded.
Safety & ADAS
Safety equipment across the Versailles C5 X range includes 6 airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), reverse sensors, reverse camera, a 360-degree surround-view monitor, and driver attention alert. The Yaobufan variant adds a transparent underfloor chassis view.
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are offered in a tiered structure on the 2026 model. The entry-level Yuebufan comes standard with cruise control, speed limiter, and In-Crash Braking (ICB). The Yubufan adds full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA). The flagship Yaobufan is equipped with a full Level 2 ADAS suite, incorporating Lane Change Assist (LCA), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Door Open Warning (DOW), and Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR).
Market Performance & Verdict
The Versailles C5 X remains the top-selling French nameplate in China, registering roughly 15,960 units sold in 2025. However, sales have trended downward from a peak of 36,000 units in 2022 to 16,000 units in 2025. Monthly sales slipped to 817 units in May 2025, averaging around 1,353 units per month over the first 11 months of that year. For an extended period, the model has contributed to over 70% of Citroën's total sales volume in China. With the 2026 model, Citroën has adopted a transparent nett-pricing strategy, lowering the entry price to RM113,700 to deliver D-segment value at a C-segment price point.
In terms of customer feedback, the plush ride delivered by the PHC adaptive suspension and the everyday practicality of its crossover body style have garnered praise. On the flip side, some owners have reported higher-than-average engine oil consumption. Automotive reviews highlight that the Versailles C5 X stands out thanks to its avant-garde French crossover styling, signature PHC "Magic Carpet" ride, and proven Aisin 8-speed auto powertrain; however, amid aggressive EV adoption and softening brand equity, its long-term market performance remains under pressure. As Citroën’s main flagbearer in China, the Versailles C5 X’s versatile "three-in-one" concept continues to provide a distinctive, left-field alternative for car buyers seeking a blend of individuality and everyday practicality.
